About Ecuador
Ecuador is an incredibly diverse and beatiful country with a rich history. Allthough one of the smallest countries in South America, you will find within its national boundaries the greatest biodiversity, with for example the largest number of different species of birds within one country, on earth. Ecuador is also home to a great variety of (indigenous) peoples and cultures. Most people are very friendly in nature.
There are many excellent resources on Ecuador on the internet, which I would like to refer to for more information. You will find a number of suggetions for further reading at the bottom of this page.
The following information comes from www.thebestofecuador.com:
Why come to Ecuador?
During the last decade Ecuador has attracted foreigners from all walks of life, which can be attributed mainly to the inviting cultures of its people and nature.
People have also come to Ecuador simply to retire due to its favorable climate and sheer biodiversity. Others again, are transplants from multinational companies including the oil sector, diplomats or ex-volunteers, who have taken to the quieter life away from the more industrialized West.
Eco-tourism has attracted many foreigners who today run everything from eco-buses across large stretches of land, to biking companies who specialize in jungle tours or who offer bike rides down the country's infamous volcanoes.
Cost of Living and economy
The US dollar was introduced as Ecudor's official currency in 2000. Although some inflation has occured since, the economy is relatively stable and the cost of living low (to western standards).
